Access to birdwatching site
Observation sites from route 251 and from a trail leading
to an observation tower.
The area
The road passes through this wetland. The marsh is bordered
by a substantial forested area. A hiking trail through the
forest, which features all sorts of fascinating plant and
animal life, also gives access to the marsh. The wider view
from the road is equally interesting. Access to the site
couldn’t be easier as the road cuts through the marsh
and there is a well-marked parking area. Another trail starting
directly from the parking area leads to an observation tower
where you can see the splendor of the entire marsh.
Birds to watch for
The Common Snipe abounds in this environment and is often
seen in company with the Virginia Rail and the Sora. Watch
for the Green-winged Teal and Pied-billed Grebe that nest
here. But that’s not all. The marsh is also the place
to admire the Willow Flycatcher and the Green Heron and from
time to time the Wild Turkey and the Bald Eagle. During migration:
the Common Tern, the Bonaparte Gull, and, if you’re
lucky, the Greater White-fronted Goose!
